This is wild to me because I have definitely had some conversations with news editors who say that journalists need to be able to take their fair share of the blame. I recall one in particular mentioning how much he corrected a cover story from a journalist and just wanted her to own up to making a few mistakes too. Personally I’m all right with a 50/50 blame. The editor is indeed there to clean up any holes in a story, but if the journalist is on the scene, then there has to be a bit of trust there, too.
