This is interesting. I didn’t know that’s what they’re doing now. I was on Upwork when it used to be oDesk. When Upwork merged the two, I went years (been there since 2014) never paying for Connects. We got 60 every single month. It wasn’t until last summer that they started charging people for connects. My guess is it was because too many underqualified people kept applying for jobs. Clients were getting fed up sifting through a bunch of duds to get to applicants they really wanted. I refused to pay for Connects for an entire year and finally gave in last month. It just didn’t seem fair to be a “top-rated freelancer” and still have to pay. I’d already proven I wasn’t spamming people. But such is life. And one job will help you collect the money you spent. It’s a tax write-off anyway, so I deal. I still don’t like it though, but I don’t think anybody who went five years with free connects (and 720 free ones for a year) would.
