“Thinking too far about situations that haven’t happened yet” is part of being a parent of children of color. They have to plan in advance in hopes that they are prepared for adults at that ignorant stage who plot their entire personalities based on complexion. She is correct to ask ahead of time. I had a little white girl ask me was my skin “burned.” I was startled and assumed she was referring to a curling iron burn. Instead she wondered why the top part of my hands were darker than my palms. Up until that moment, I had never paid much attention to that. There is absolutely nothing wrong with answering a question with the intent to EXPLAIN differences. The only people who are uncomfortable with that are those who are uncomfortable with those who are unlike themselves already.
