…ourselves represented as much in the media, we’re subject to invalidation and receive less support. “I’m sure you’ll change your mind,” “Nothing in life is as worthwhile as having children,” “It’s your duty to have children,” “You’re letting our people down,” and other such sentiments take on added weight when directed to a Black or POC childfree woman.
I’ve heard all of the above, but the one about it being a “duty” pissed me off the most. There was a guy walking past me at Starbucks who invited himself to my table. He told me in African culture, it’s an embarrassment to not have children. I told him, “Well, don’t let me embarrass you any longer. Leave.” This fool still asked for my phone number. I gave him a fax machine number and laughed every single time I heard the fax machine go off in my old apartment. My “embarrassed” self was so tickled.
