Quick tip here, because it took me an embarrassingly long time to figure this out: To save your Medium work, go into edit mode in your story. Copy all. Go into Google Docs to paste; the formatting follows better than pasting directly into Word (also, clouds are good, I’ve been brainwashed to believe). Then, save your Google Docs file as a PDF onto your hard drive (I’m not brainwashed that fast).
I have been doing this long before I was on Medium. It only took one website with more than 500 of my posts for me to find out the hard way. The company just up and closed, and no one told me. Then it happened a second time with a company who bought out another one. All of a sudden, my profile link that had worked for years redirected to a homepage because I no longer a writer there. From that point forward, I saved to Google Docs and scanned printed copies as PDFs too. I save everything I write 3x even if I don’t like it that much.
