I can count off at least four white women I worked with who stared at me like I was a museum exhibit simply for wrapping my hair before putting a hat on.

Two standout comments:

“So you can, like, fit it all under there?”

“Wow, I am glad I stayed late so I could see this.”

I wish I was making this up. I just shook my head and turned back to the mirror. There is such a way to react to something unfamiliar. That wasn’t it.
